Could you elaborate on the accent issue you mentioned, and why you felt like you needed to manage it? I adore this album, btw, *and* the accent — reminds me of home.
Yes. I don’t dislike my accent at all, but I thought then that I needed to play it up instead of just let it be and I find that it’s a distracting element of those early records. 🤍
Is syllablicki a real word? You come up with some good words. Also what microphone did you come up with? And do you use a particular mic now and how about presmps?
Ha! I don’t think so, but it should be. I come from a long line of word maker-uppers. We either used a Shure SM7 or an AKG C12. I know that’s two ends of the financial spectrum, but that’s sort of the sorry with my recording my voice - it sounds the best through the cheapest or the most expensive mics. These days we’re partial to a great 67 an engineer friend owns and he lets us rent it for next to nothing. Voices change, therefore mic choices do too, and I’m a much better singer than I used to be in every way - I know how to go about recording a vocal whereas in the beginning I knew very little about technique. Don’t know for sure about preamp as that’s always changing too (these days there are so many good options) but a few Avalon compressors always do a fine job for us. 🤍
I am LOVING this section! So many songs coming of which I can’t wait to hear the story on. My method is to listen to the song. Then read your piece on it. Then listen again. Like I said, so many I look forward to coming in the future, personally. Thanks AM for lending such a perspective to your work for us. I already know what each one means to my heart. This takes it so much deeper. JB
I’m so glad — it’s fun for me too, though I admittedly have to strain my memory a bit. As you can tell I don’t remember every detail. But that’s another reason to write it all down. 🤍
Fascinating reading Allison. To use a word I recently discovered from you, I’m jonseing to visit Nashville. I’ve always loved your accent from your early albums, it was part of the attraction!
Sorry to butt in again. I think those electric guitars were Richard Bennett. I remember we recorded the basic tracks and he worked out all those parts and came back the next day and rocked it - if my memory serves me well...

You were close, AM. https://www.thefreedictionary.com/syllabically
All great choices for mics. Thank you.
