SUNDAY SELFIE SERIES #73: The luminous Lokelani Alabanza. I was so fortunate to become acquainted with Lokelani last year when my friend Libby served Saturated Ice Cream at a small dinner party. The concept is genius — it is plant based, hemp derived CBD ice cream — and it is the result of years of studying food and traveling the world. You can order it!
Lokelani is such a lovely person — I’m not sure I’ve met anyone who has a better vibe. Her answer to the forgiveness question is among my very favorites I’ve received since I started this series. And may I just say — wow, is she beautiful. Lokelani is living proof that when it is true, it can only come from within.
What has humbled you more than anything else?
TIME. This past year and a half made it crystal clear to me how precious and fleeting time is and the respect it deserves. My father always told me "Time waits for no man, woman or child." I started a business in the middle of a pandemic and many incredible humans gave me their time in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. Something I will forever be deeply grateful for. The sudden and tragic loss of my beloved Uncle in June quickly reminded me that things happen and change far too rapidly. Too much time had passed since we last spoke. His death stunned my family. Time aside from life passes quickly, once it’s gone, it's gone.
Do you feel like you’ve gotten a good education?
This is something that crosses my mind often. I’ve had an innumerable number of teachers, they have come in different forms and at different seasons in my life. Bright lights on my path are how I see them, lighting up each step I take. Some lights are brighter than others. Do I still want to continue my formal education? Absolutely! I go back and forth on getting a Masters in Gastronomy (the Art & Science of Food & Drink). We will see what happens. Haha.
Do you believe that forgiveness benefits the forgiver or the transgressor?
Perhaps both...Depending on the situation. Forgiveness is about receiving. More often than not receiving can be quite difficult to do. Can the forgiver receive the transgressors apology and heal? Can the transgressor receive the forgiver's forgiveness and grow? At some point either one or both will benefit.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
My friendships. I carry their hearts in my heart. These are relationships that have challenged me, accepted me for everything I am and am not, brought me joy, laughter, expanded my world, taught me loyalty, mutual respect, and unconditional love beyond blood relation. For me, human connection is incredibly powerful.
How would you like to live out your golden years?
This honestly didn't occur to me until this year. Mostly because I entered a new decade. Present moment is important in life, however it has been stimulating to think about what lies ahead. After the past sixteen months, I look forward to more time with my tribe. And an exceptional glass of bubbles.
“Time aside from life passes quickly, once it’s gone, it’s gone.” Heartbreakingly true.
