SUNDAY SELFIE SERIES #68: Jesse Dayton. I don’t remember the first time I met Jesse — I feel like I’ve always known him and he’s like family to me. That’s all due to his warmth, kindness, and ability to connect, but also to the knowing winks and nods we’ve always exchanged as scrappy kids who all but grew up in the music business. As a musician, Jesse is the quintessential pro — he knows what the job is and he does it with style, heart, and soul. But there’s more — he’ll make you split your sides laughing (one of my favorite memories is making him double over with laughter once while we were standing on the side of some stage in Texas) and then make you think.
Watch for his first book this fall — I can’t wait. In the meantime, listen to “Daddy Was a Badass,” as much as possible.

1. What has humbled you more than anything else?
Not that working w/ your heroes or barely escaping death or sickness wasn’t humbling. But navigating through my spiritual ignorance and learning new models of thought & discipline…that’s a daily ritual.
2. Do you feel you’ve gotten a good education?
I’ve benefited greatly from having parents who were the 1st to make it off the farm, go off to college & become academics. My love of music, books, travel, politics, sports, motorcycles, cooking, films & spirituality was their gift to me.
3. Do you believe forgiveness benefits the forgiver or the transgressor?
At this stage of my life, I’ve learned that not forgiving others, and especially not forgiving myself, is too great a burden for me to carry.
4. What is your proudest accomplishment?
Surprisingly, my proudest accomplishments have nothing to do with my career, and everything to do with my relationships. My son Sam is my proudest by a long shot.
5. How would you like to spend your golden years?
I had a huge comin-to-Jesus during Covid. I got off the hamster wheel & realized I’d been chasing something I already had. Focusing on my family makes all that other stuff even better. Golden years? Riding motorcycles around the world with my gorgeous wife starts ASAP!
I'm not hip to him but nice nonetheless. ❤
I love Jesse Dayton! He was one of my first interviews with Buddy Magazine and when I took him a copy of the magazine for his autograph, you would have thought I'd handed him a million bucks. What a great Q&A!
