Allison,
I have had tragedy in my life, my best friend hit and killed walking home inebriated from our local country bar, my brother suiciding at age 21, and my mother dying 10 months after him with brain cancer just diagnosed. My question is do you dream about your mother and father? I dream of my friend and family but they refuse to talk to me. You were dealt a tragedy and that is why I wonder if others have the dreams. They always leave me so sad and confused.
Dear Roberta,
Thank you for trusting me with this question. I feel the pain and confusion coming through in your words, but I also feel love for the people you’ve lost. Grief makes it difficult to make sense of the world sometimes. When we have so much love in us that can’t land in the place its meant to go, ie. with its intended recipient, it can feel like sorrow.
I have dreamt of my mother and father, yes. But it is not a common occurrence. In the years just after they died, it happened more frequently, but these days it’s rare. You probably guessed I’m one of those who believes dreams hold a wealth of information for us to use when we’re awake. A cloud is sometimes just a cloud, but of course, my nature is to read more into it. Age reminds me that’s not always necessary, but I think when you’ve lost loved ones, you’ll dearly hang onto any shred of experience with them. For instance, I’ve done regular sessions with a spiritual medium for over ten years.
I have nothing to posit regarding why your loved ones won’t talk to you in your dreams. But I do think spirits are less likely to communicate with us if we face them with anything less than complete openness. Maybe you’re not ready to hear what they have to say. Just a thought.
All we can do with grief is allow it.
Peace. Love.
Allison
